Vector Structural Engineering Ltd is a structural engineering consultancy based in central Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand.

We’re known for delivering high-quality, innovative and cost-effective design solutions – combining technical excellence with practical thinking, efficient processes and clear kōrero (communication) throughout the journey from concept to completion.

We provide specialist services across commercial, industrial and residential projects of all sizes, throughout the Nelson Tasman region. Every design we produce is grounded in proven engineering principles and strengthened by a collaborative, agile approach. Most important to us is designing with buildability in mind to maximise success on site with contractors.

Complete structural engineering design and documentation

We offer a comprehensive approach to building projects, ensuring structural safety, functionality, and compliance with local codes. We complete necessary calculations, technical drawings, material specifications and producer statements to deliver a consent ready package of documents.

Draughting, drawing preparation and specification

Using the latest Revit software, our team of draughting technicians model the structure in 3D to coordinate the structure with key stakeholders. The models are used to produce clear, detailed structural drawings. These documents guide builders, contractors, and authorities during the construction phase, alongside precise written specifications which define materials, methods, dimensions, and essential requirements for construction.

Foundations

Our design team have experience designing a range of foundations that are suitable for the ground conditions and loads. We work closely with the contractors and Geotech engineers to develop foundations that are suited to the ground conditions while providing solutions that are economical by considering material and machinery availability. Typical foundation designs we have experience with are slab on grade, pads, timber and reinforced concrete piles using driven and augured methods of installation.

Retail, commercial and industrial buildings

Covers design expertise for a variety of building types—including shops, offices, and factories—each with unique functional requirements, code constraints, and operational needs. The engineering approach ensures these spaces remain safe, adaptable, and compliant, addressing specific challenges such as large open spans or heavy equipment loads.

Retaining wall design

We design a range of retaining structures including cantilever pole walls, tieback pole walls, reinforced block and concrete and anchored shotcrete walls. Both for permanent and temporary works requirements.

Earthquake assessment and strengthening

Services include seismic assessments of buildings to determine vulnerability to earthquakes, recommending and designing strengthening solutions. These might involve retrofitting older structures or applying advanced technologies to ensure safer performance during seismic events, crucial in earthquake-prone regions.

Residential design for new homes, additions and alterations

We offer full engineering support for new house builds, renovations, and expansions. This includes integrating client vision with technical requirements for structure and safety, enabling creative solutions for modern living spaces and smooth approval by local councils.

Multi-residential developments

Expert design services for apartments, townhouses, and other multi-unit buildings address the unique structural demands of shared walls, floors, and communal areas. Engineers balance efficiency, safety, and regulatory requirements while creating attractive and durable developments for multiple families or occupants.

Gibbons has worked with Vector Structural Engineering on numerous projects over the years, including completing the structural design for the Silky Otter Cinema and Joe’s Garage developments at Berryfields Crossing, multi tenanted commercial and light industrial builds including a small office development at LQS Industrial Park, and most recently a 4,000m² Woolworths Supermarket at Nelson Junction.

A high standard of expertise

The August 2022 rain event was devastating to our property; it ripped apart the driveway and then the foundation of our home.  We will never forget the image of our house hanging precariously over the hillside.  While a number of well-meaning professionals and acquaintances urged us to walk away from the house, Greg and his team were called in to assess the prospects of restoration.   Where others saw a tear-down, Greg saw possibilities.  He and his geotechnical team took a hard look and soon began to see practical solutions.  It is rare to find an engineer who has both hard and soft skills.  Calm and reassuring, Greg listened to us, and he clearly understood how important our home was.  He was an excellent communicator, effective in working with us and with other professionals.  He understood the complexity of the project; all the way from gathering vital geotechnical data, inventing a solution-based design, applying for consent, fleshing out detailed construction plans, and overseeing the actual construction.  He was patient, clear and strategic throughout the 18 month-long reconstruction.  Greg’s engineering expertise and his standing within the local community, collaborating with allied professionals in geology, architecture, and construction–not to mention Council staff–were essential to the ultimate success of this project.  His follow-through was consistent right through to the final finishing touch.  Greg and the team at Vector Structural Engineering have set a high standard of expertise and a conscientious ethic of care that made a profound and lasting difference in our lives.
